Bailey and Katy came to us as rescues. We lost Bailey in June of 2016 and Katy in November of 2022. We were blessed to have Annie join us in August of 2016. They have brought great love and joy to our immediate family and to extended family and friends. This blog will share their stories and issues related to Shelties. Some told from their perspective and others told from those that share this journey with them. Notice: This blog does have Amazon product links and Google Adsense

We Move From Peanut Butter to Cheese
Since the discovery of peanut butter, Bailey has been uncomplicated about taking pills. Recently Katy discovered the secret of the peanut butter and while she will lick the pill clean, she will no longer take pills with peanut butter. We have moved on to cheese.
Bailey is still oblivious to the issue. Human food is a rare treat. Encounters with human food have not been friendly. He loves cheese and peanut butter. Katy is still suspicious so she gets an occasional cheese treat with no pill and some are the real deal. I am not sure where we go when if she starts refusing cheese.

I use hot dogs. I wish I didn't but its the only thing I can shove the pill in to get Cain to eat them. I will cut Casey a tiny sliver so she doesn't feel left out. I can make one hot dog go through 3 pill feedings. Because Cain and Casey already lick too much thanks to their oversized jowls, PB is a no-no.
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest hot dogs, or maybe a small meatball? We've used canned tuna and salmon as well for a lot of things. I find anything that is really stinky generally works best. I guess I'm lucky my dog isn't as smart to grasp what evil lies beneath. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe have a problem with human food. Bailey tends to get sick. We haven't tried much with Katy. I am hoping the cheese works out. Every so often people think they are being "kind" and slip Bailey meat from their plate and then we end up with one sick dog. I have no idea why, but he does well with kibble, but human food not so good.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried pill pockets by Greenies?
ReplyDeletePill pockets work great for my dogs. You can break them up and squish around the pill, saves money that way.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Pill Pockets - available from the pet store and vets. They come in pill size and capsule size. Reilly loves them and gobbles them down pill and all.
ReplyDeleteReilly that is exactly what I meant, I just said it screwy. I meant the Pill Pockets by Greenies
ReplyDeleteooops...I DID say it right! We just said the same thing lol
ReplyDeleteRicky likes a little ball of canned food (with the pill inside) - he never gets canned food and thinks he is in heaven! :)
ReplyDeleteOops, they are getting smarter and smarter! I wonder who the winner is in the end of the day : )
ReplyDeleteMy furry sister, Nala can take a pill hidden in a folded piece of cheese, but me... I just can't do it. I can't gulp down a piece of cheese like Nala can. I have to inspect every piece of folded food, which would eventually expose any pill. Mommy crushes any pills I have to take, and mixes it with cream cheese. I don't know what I would do if I got sick from cheese... I love it so much! ;)
ReplyDeleteWoofs & hugs,
~Bailey
