Monday Mischief: The storm before the Blizzard of 2015

As we mentioned in a previous post Mom got behind with her Blogging. The weekend before the big blizzard we had another storm with wet heavier snow, just not so much of it. There was enough that our Jr. Sheep's Mom's weekend class was canceled, so we didn't get to play with our Jr. Sheep as promised. We were quite disappointed.

However, we did try to make the best of it by playing in the snow. Mom captured some pictures, but never got to post them. She decided they'd make a good Mischief Monday post.

We know not every dog loves snow, but we love playing in it, eating it, and yes, napping in it.

Monday Mischief: The Christmas Prep Edition

We got new jingle collars when we got our holiday grooming done on Saturday. Mom says they look like jester collars, but we know they are jingle collards, not as good as our plush ones, but still a cool holiday edition.

Dad and Mom are both a bit under the weather as we approach Operation Santa Paws. They are barking lots and making that funny sneezy sound. We are hoping they are better before Christmas Eve when all the sheep come to visit.

We've been trying hard to pick up those last minute Santa Paws points by being good. Katy stayed up to watch over Mom when she wasn't able to sleep. Bailey's been wrangling lots of Jr. Sheep. We think the crowning achievement that will take us over the top is that the Jr. Sheep are no longer afraid of dogs thanks to us. While they don't trust all dogs they are no longer afraid of us and that took real work on our part. Especially since Katy had to get over being afraid of them first.

We are posed next to Mom's heirloom Nativity. Sadly, Grandma lost the roof at one point, but it was handmade by Grandma's Uncle during WWII for Grandma's Mom as a Christmas present. Mom has been nursing it carefully along. Most of characters have changed over the years. However, Mom still has the 4 Kings from her childhood (Grandma always tells the story about the 4th King and Mom finally found the story to add to her Christmas collection), two baby Jesus (one always got lost during the season), and one shepherd. The rest are pieces acquired when Grandma had grandkids. The older pieces didn't all survive because they weren't all plastic.

The second card wreath is almost full, but Mom is winning the card race in that one. Her crochet friends have been sending lots of cards, but we got another batch on Saturday to keep in the running.

Thomas the Train Birthday Party

Working with Jr. Sheep is lots of work. Birthday parties seem to be a big deal in Jr. Sheep land. This weekend Mom and Dad had a Thomas the Train themed party for one of the Jr. Sheep in the family and he wanted everything to be Thomas. As you can see, even we got into the party mode.

One of the coolest things about birthday parties is dog happy birthday cookies for us. The birthday sheep gave us each our own cookie after everyone sang Happy Birthday and Dog Dad was cutting his Thomas cake. We are looking forward to future Jr. Sheep birthday parties.

The sheep got a Thomas set and Bailey had to examine it to make sure it was safe for little hands. That required him to climb into the Figure 8 and examine it from all sides. Cries of Godzilla were heard and we were sure they were glad I was there to make sure they were all safe. We can only believe Godzilla must be some safety inspector or like Bob the Builder, someone that promotes safe building. After all, we know they were thrilled to have me playing with them. Still not sure, what is so exciting about those little cars that go round and round and keep kids entertained for hours. However, we have decided that happy sheep playing with trains are better than crying, screaming sheep.

Katy is taking to little sheep. She was the most engaged and involved she's ever been with people at the house. Bailey exhausted himself being the entertainer and sheep herder in chief. At one point, he curled up on the couch with the youngest sheep all in the line of duty to get the sheep to take a nap. Of course, once the sheep was down he did decide it would be OK if he napped, too.

Sunday, we all rested, as we were quite tired.

The Turkeys are Back

Sunday the Halloween toys mysteriously disappeared but they left behind our Thanksgiving Turkey toys. Mom has searched over the years and sadly, Thanksgiving is an underrepresented toy market for dogs. She hasn't located many for us. However, we love our gobbling turkeys and we were quite pleased to see them return. Well, Katy will be pleased when she finally steals one away.

Monday Mischief: The Cone of Shame

So Mom and Dad really do mean No when they tell me not to scratch and bite my hot spots?

The Friday before Labor Day weekend not only did Mom and Dad get sick, but I came down with a nasty hot spot. The Vet was gone for the holiday, so I had to make my first ever visit to the emergency Vet. (Not bad for 11 years if I do say so myself.) The assistants were very friendly and gentle. Dog Dad liked talking with the Vet on duty.

Then came the bad news. Since I couldn't stop attacking my hot spot, I had to wear the cone. It was awful folks. I've seen you post pictures, but the shame and the awkwardness was awful. Dog Dad and I made a deal after one dog of cone wearing. If I wouldn't attack the hot spot I could try to prove I could be trusted.

I'll tell you after the horror of bumping into every table, chair and wall in the house, I took that deal and just wore my t-shirt. The hot spot is almost cleared up. However, I noticed they haven't put the cone away. If I even think about slipping, it's coming back.

Monday Mischief: Parallel Shelties

Mom has tasked us with the very important job of helping some little sheep learn some very technical math concepts. As Shelties, you know one of our best talents is counting. However, Mom is broadening our skill base to help demonstrate geometry concepts for little ones.

Today you have parallel Shelties. Do to the fact we are dogs and not boring lines on paper we don't exhibit pure examples of the concept. However, if you were a kids studying, would you prefer boring lines or adorable dogs? We are going to be helping out with some human little sheep in the near future and while it may interfere with our blogging, we also plan to continue our educational math program. We do perpendicular pretty well so that could be on the agenda soon.

Monday Mischief

We warned the Mama it was not a good idea to travel without us. After all, we know how much trouble she and Dog Dad can get into without us. However, they were insistent they could handle a trip to New York for a wedding without us. We told Mom that leaving without preposting more than a few Friday Flower posts was a very bad idea. She was sure she'd get caught up when she got back.

Well they claim it was the best wedding they have been to in years. In fact, they still haven't stopped talking about how much fun they had. However, when they got home, they both were sick for days. That's what comes of not having your Shelties to care for you and scare those germs away.

Once behind, Mom has kept up with her volunteer work, but the Blogging has fallen off. Last week we finally protested she had to go visit our Blogging friends and get our Blog back up again. So, we started visiting people on Friday and finally got Mom to prepost again.

Don't tell them, but we had a great time while they were gone. Our favorite relative stayed with us and she is willing to give endless tummy rubs, walks, and is quite generous with the treats. While happy to have Mom and Dad home, we didn't want her to go home. She made some excuse about her Mom wanting her back, but we think her Mom could have let us borrow her for a bit longer. Mom and Dad said they have two weddings already scheduled for next summer. The downside is that our favorite relative is invited, too. Now the dreaded boarding word has been used. We are thinking someplace with private rooms and dining would be good.

Monday Mischief

Hope all of you had a wonderful Independence Day. The only day that the weather was really bad over the long weekend was sadly the day itself, July 4th. The other days were beautiful. Mom missed her parade. They refused to postpone and Mom refused to get soaked in the rain. We won because we had Mom, Dad, and one of our favorite human cousins for the whole day to ourselves. Don't tell Mom, but we were performing a rain dance. However, we were duly punished when the rain came with thunder. We may have to rethink the whole rain dance as a means of preventing the parents from leaving home thing. Those thunder boomers are no fun.

Mom's birthday is this week and we are working hard trying to decide what we should do for her birthday. While Katy and I love bones, treats, and squeaky toys, Mom really isn't into that stuff.

Dog Dad suggested we let Mom sleep in. You see we have this habit of performing health checks on our humans. It is important that if they are in bed after expected times that we check to make sure they are alive and well. We regularly perform this morning duty at no additional charge for our pet parents. In fact we do it for guests, too. Katy found her human cousin asleep over the holiday and decided to do a health check and poked her awake. Once awake, Bailey decided she was available for distributing attention. Dog Dad couldn't possibly mean suspending doing this to Mom for a morning could he? After all, providing safety health checks is a valuable service. By poking humans in bed, we assure they are in fact alive and responding. Stopping this for a day hardly seems like a safe birthday present. However, Dog Dad insists this would be something Mom would truly love.

It can't have annoyed our human cousin too much because Dog Dad says she's coming back to stay with us when the parents have to travel to something called a wedding.

We have a more pressing problem. We really have to find a better gift for Mom.

Trying Out Crochet

Don't knock it until you try it. That Crochet Dude makes tons of money. Now imagine being a dude and a dog? I could really market myself.

Ok Mom just a little problem I can't read. Was that a DC or a SC at the end of the row?

When I make my own line, I'll have one that has an attachment that helps you hold the hook with your paw. This is really too awkward for the average dog. I've got to get my peeps on this now. Maybe some yarn that doesn't get attached to my nails would be good, too.

Whisker Walk 2014

The Whisker Walk was a smashing success. While it took Mom a week to get the pictures up, our enthusiasm has not been diminished. It was the hottest weather we've ever had for one of these events and Mom was concerned because we are notorious for refusing to drink unless we are home. Well it was just the first of many ways we shocked her (in a good way) during the event. Not only did we drink from our bowl that Dog Dad packed, but we even drank from the water provided on the route. That never happens.

Mom likes that they list the rules upfront. She finds it very strange that while they very clearly state that they don't want aggressive dogs there, several people insist they bring their aggressive dogs to help them become socialized. A huge pack of dogs walking in a confined area is really not the best time to be working on your dog's aggression issues. Maybe as a final exam project, but certainly not in the beginner stages.

This is where we all met up and lined up for the walk. This year they got a late start. We decided to rest up and save our energy for the walk. It was hot.

As the start time got close, we got lined up and Mom was again shocked instead of tucking in behind my tail, Katy shot off ahead and set a brutal pace for the pack.

She led for about 1 1/2 miles, and then she got distracted at the half way water stop and lost interest in leading. She got distracted by all the things there were to see and do at the water break. That was just as well as Mom and Dad were very concerned about her getting over heated. It also gave me a chance to catch up. I'm not used to Katy out pacing me like that. She usually tucks in behind my tail and checks out people from around my backside.

After the walk, the humans had lunch and we rested in a shady spot. Then we went over to the CMDART Agility tryouts. CMDART is an emergency group that works with the Red Cross setting up dog shelters when disasters occur in our area. They run this fundraiser every year as one way of raising funds for their mission. We got a great kit from them last year that helps you get your pets ready for evacuations.

We didn't get pictures because Mom and Dad both were out on the field at the same time, which doesn't happen very often. However, we both had big moments. We have never done well in the tunnel. Katy flat out has always refused and it has never been my favorite activity either. However, we both made repeated trips through the tunnels. The trainers showed Mom and Dad some new tricks to trick tempt us into performing the stunts. I even made it up and down the see saw thingy before I realized I was on it because Mom held a tempting smelly amazing treat under my nose instead of dropping it on the ground like they had tried previously. I was so intent on following the smell I didn't even realize she had me on the tippy thing.

After our amazing job at agility, we decided to try out the Tennis Ball Fetch Game. This is always one of our favorites. It is amazing how you can freeze when surrounded by so many balls to choose. Mom started tossing them and eventually we picked two. We won Kongs, a Snoopy leash and collar, and some very tasty treats. We also won a life jacket that Mom is thinking about doing a giveaway on because neither of us goes near the water.

After our wins, we went shopping and visited the various rescue/shelter booths. We had to get another picture of the Kissing Dachshund Rescue Booth for Frankie. Yes, they were here too. Those are some hard working charitable Dachshunds kissing for charity.

We had lots of fun shopping, but Mom struck out on finding Katy another fleece bed. She was hoping to replace her donut bed, with a flat fleece egg crate bed. I love the donut, but Katy likes a flat bed. She has one downstairs, but tends to sleep on the floor upstairs. Mom was hoping to find another one. Unfortunately, she found the last one at the event that was cancelled this year. That vendor hasn't been at any of the other events. Dog Dad has been experimenting with moving the bed upstairs and down, but was hoping we could just have another one to use.

We'd like to thank the Sterling Animal Shelter for hosting this event. We have so much fun at it every year and are already looking forward to seeing announcements for next year's event.

Sheltie CSI

We know Mom loves those police shows so it made no sense why she couldn't understand that we had to be in her perennial garden to explore a crime that had occurred here.

Here we are searching for evidence of an intruder. You think the parents would be happy, but all they wanted was for us to give up our crime fighting and leave the crime scene.

We discovered possible nose print evidence here. We don't want to prejudge anything but we suspect bunnies are back in the area. As specialists, we don't prejudge the evidence.

Making sure no evidence no matter how small is left unexplored.

Mom and Dad halted our study. However, we are not giving up. We will continue our study and make sure Mom's perennial garden is protected. We will post more news as we have it.
